The Brenham Citizens Police Academy supports the Brenham Community by offering the following Functions: Citizen’s on Patrol An outgrowth of the CPA Program, the Citizen’s on Patrol (COPS) Program is designed to draw upon the experiences of CPA members. Graduates provide a tremendous community resource, utilizing their training to address community and neighborhood crime concerns. The objective of the COPS Program is to utilize volunteers in operational aspects of policing that allows participation in combating criminal behavior and supporting operations of the department. Participants patrol neighborhood streets and simply become an extension of the eyes and ears of the department. In 2006, COPS donated over 2955 hours to the community by participating in the program. This service helped patrol officers, allowing officers more opportunities to address major problems in the community.
Citizen’s Police Academy Classes The Brenham Citizen’s Police Academy is a multifaceted educational program where interested citizens learn about the Brenham Police Department, how it operates, and the policing challenges which face our city. It brings together a cross-section of community representatives for twelve week sessions of instruction and discussion of the departments operations and policies which facilitate the delivery of police services. The purpose of the class is to provide members of the community with an opportunity to gain specific knowledge about the workings of the Brenham Police Department and to gain general insight into the field of law enforcement through the use of tours, lectures, demonstrations, and “hands on” experiences. The class provides increased awareness and understanding that will enable participants to be more effective in their involvement with crime prevention. National Night Out National Night Out is the nation’s largest annual crime and drug prevention event that occurs annually, on the first Tuesday of August. It is designed to 1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2) generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; 3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships; and 4) send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. In Brenham, the event involves citizens, area law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials. Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods ‘celebrate’ National Night Out with a variety of events and activities such as: block parties, cookouts, visits from local police, flashlight walks, and contests for youth. Brenham’s National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer community.
